A dream of mine is going to come true this year. Africa. Photography. Children. Travel. Love. I have the opportunity to travel to Kenya this November with three other Colorado photographers to work with Friends Vision, an organization that provides care and child sponsorship opportunities for orphans in Kenya.

We will be collecting used digital cameras of all kinds and packing them up with us to give to the children as we teach them basic photography skills. These are skills that have the potential to awaken their inner artist. Skills that have the power to promote healing and self-expression. Skills that may even be a way for them to earn a living someday. When not teaching the children, we will be documenting the meaningful work being done by Friends Vision so they will be able to raise awareness and funds in a more powerful way. We might also have the opportunity to take portraits of the children to send to their sponsors!

How Can You Help?

We would be so encouraged by your support! Here are some of the ways you can help:

- Donate your USED (or new!) DIGITAL CAMERAS for us to take with us to give to the kids. We’re looking for digital cameras in working order with all the necessary parts, if possible (batteries, chargers, cards, card readers, etc.). It doesn’t matter if they’re cheap point & shoots or big fancy SLRs – I’m sure the kids will love them! We’re also looking for a few small printers – there are some travel-sized mini-printers that can print straight off of a camera. We’d love to be able to hand out prints as we work – some of these children may not have any photographs of themselves to keep. If we can get our hands on some USED LAPTOPS IN WORKING ORDER, we’ll bring those with us, too!

- Donate your FREQUENT FLYER MILES. If you have accumulated miles that you’re not going to use, we’d love to have them! It may help us get over there a bit more cheaply. Sign up for an account at points.com, or contact your airline / credit card company… here’s some more info about transferring your miles. If you need my frequent flyer numbers in order to transfer miles, just let me know which airline you’ll be transferring from!

- Donate FINANCIALLY. You can make donations towards my trip at my YouCaring account. We’re each trying to raise $2600 to cover airfare, travel costs, food, and lodging. Any money raised above and beyond our goal amounts will go straight to Friends Vision as a donation, or will be used to purchase any accessories necessary for our donated cameras to be useful to the kids.

- Plan to BUY A FRAMED OR MOUNTED PRINT from me when I get back. You know me, I’ll be photographing constantly, both for documentary purposes and fine art work…and all proceeds from any Africa print sales will go towards this trip.

- Consider SPONSORING A CHILD through Friends Vision! If we know who your sponsored child is, we can bring extra letters, etc with us, and try to take plenty of portraits of your sponsored child, with you in mind

- Join us at a FUNDRAISER EVENT. We have some fun fundraiser ideas planned … we’ll keep you updated on the details as we figure them out!

Sarah and John’s Story:

John and Sarah met sometime in 2001 or 2002. Neither of them is sure which year it was, but for the sake of continuity, let’s go with the Fall of 2001. They became close friends in the Summer of 2003. They fell in love in the Spring of 2005. But they broke up in the Winter of 2010. Luckily, they worked through many issues and became engaged in the Fall of 2010!!

John remembers first meeting Sarah at her friend Wendy’s house. Wendy was hosting a small impromptu gathering, where someone was trying to teach about half a dozen people to play poker. Wendy and Sarah sat next to each other and kept laughing and not paying attention. Sarah still does not know how to play poker. John sat next to Scott (Sarah’s and John’s mutual friend) at the opposite end of the table. John wasn’t paying attention to the poker lessons either…he was paying attention to Sarah. But Sarah had a boyfriend at the time.

Sarah remembers first meeting John at a different (earlier) social gathering (also organized by our dear friend, Wendy!) at a Westminster billiards bar, called Pink-E’s. Scott had been saying recently that she just HAD to meet his new friend, John, because his sense of humor reminded Scott of hers, and he thought these humors united could result in heights of hilarity for all! Extending Wendy’s invitation to Scott, Sarah was delighted when he said he’d be bringing John. Finally, she’d get to meet this John fellow. Amidst a sea of hot pink felted pool tables, Sarah was soon charmed by John, who was handsome, tall, fun, and had the charisma, maturity and galantry that she wished her current boyfriend would have honed by then. Now, Sarah knows that this was their first meeting, because she remembers the party at Wendy’s house very well, having again extended Wendy’s invitation to Scott, and to John, whom she’d already met… and already adored.

Things were pretty crazy for many months prior to the wedding. John and Sarah were at the tail end of rehabbing their house, and were at the point where they needed to decide which things could wait until after the wedding (which was being held in their backyard). As an example, a mere week before the wedding, there was a toilet and a bathtub sitting in our backyard!!

Last September I traveled out to Beverly Hills for the first time for a photography conference. I booked an early flight so I would have time to do a photo walk with friends before the festivities began. See? We explored the shopping district around Rodeo Drive, had a lovely lunch, tried Pinkberry for the first time, and window-shopped all the fancy stores. So fun!
