Yes, I shoot film. I don’t really like to make a big deal about it, because that’s not what it’s all about. I want my client’s to choose me because they love my work. But I think for some couples film can be scary in an everything-is-digital world. I think when some people hear film, they think of the old-fashioned traditional wedding photography…but that’s more about the style, not the medium, right? I love film so much! It does have it’s downsides for me as a photographer though: it’s seriously expensive! But my clients deserve the best! Here’s a quick example of the same shot in both film and digital. Can you tell which is which? Which do you like better?
Film vs. Digital
I also think that when the general public hears the word film they are reminded of the low end film they used to shoot in compact cameras or they think of the grainy photos in newspaper (which has more to do with the printing style) from days past. And the folks around who have never shot with film think of the older family photos and news clippings they’ve seen and have the same stereotype. But the right film is still tremendously good and well worth it when it is used by a talented photographer. Alas, i feel as though I am preaching to the choir. I came home this weekend from my grandmothers and I brought back three 100 year old photos of my great grandparents in a congregation from the church they went to. Even then the lens glass, paper, and printing technique was extremely good as I could see the details in boots, jackets, hats, and faces for several rows!
